1997 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS Soft Top

This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS Soft Top was completed by Osprey Custom 4x4 in December 2022. Finished in Beluga Black and powered by a supercharged 6.2L LSA V8, it preserves the unmistakable proportions and open-air character of the original North American Specification Defender while delivering dramatically enhanced performance, comfort, and everyday usability.

Supercharged V8 Performance

At its heart is a 6.2L supercharged LSA V8 producing approximately 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque. Power is managed through a 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission with a PCS GSM push-button selector and LED display, then distributed through a heavy-duty NP241 transfer case.

Custom headers, a performance dual-exhaust system, Griffin aluminum radiator, dual PermaCool electric cooling fans, and stainless-steel oil-cooler, brake, and fuel lines support the upgraded powertrain. Double Cardan front and rear driveshafts and heavy-duty axles with upgraded CV joints complete a drivetrain engineered to handle the additional performance.

High-performance Wilwood brakes at all four corners provide braking capability appropriate to the vehicle’s substantial power.

A New Foundation

The restoration is built upon a new hot-dipped galvanized chassis fitted with Terrafirma suspension and steering components. Caster-corrected front radius arms, cranked rear radius arms, upgraded track rod, drag link, steering damper, and a heavy-duty aluminum front skid plate contribute to improved stability, durability, and control.

Seventeen-inch machined KMC KM444 Mesa bead-lock wheels are wrapped in 295/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, giving the Defender a purposeful stance while preserving useful all-terrain capability.

Beluga Black, Carefully Resolved

The body is finished in deep Beluga Black with satin-black wheel arches and trim. A multi-point Safety Devices cage is finished in satin-black powder coat, while a premium black Badger soft top provides weather protection with roll-up and removable side and rear windows for open-air driving.

The front features a satin-black grille, matching light surrounds, side intake and wing-top vents, and modern LED lighting. A NAS-style ARB winch bumper with brush guard carries two six-inch auxiliary LED lamps and a Warn M8000-S winch with synthetic line and an aluminum hawse fairlead.

At the rear, a NAS-style step bumper incorporates a two-inch receiver, trailer wiring, recovery points, and a rearview camera. A heavy-duty swing-away carrier supports the full-size spare.

Modern Comfort Inside

Amp Research power side steps make cabin access easier. Inside, heated and cooled Range Rover SVR power front seats are upholstered in black leather and Alcantara with diamond-perforated leather inserts. Two matching forward-facing rear seats can be stowed to create additional cargo space when passenger seating is not required.

A modern dashboard supports effective heating and air conditioning, while power windows, a heated windscreen, USB charging, rear air ducts, a full-length center console, and oversized cupholders improve everyday comfort.

The driver faces a leather-and-piano-black steering wheel with brushed-metal spokes. An Alpine seven-inch touchscreen provides Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and digital signal processing, supported by an eight-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system. A Viper keyless-entry and remote-start system adds further convenience.
